2D cutting optimization, explained

What is 2D cutting optimization?

Two-dimensional (2D) cutting optimization, also called sheet nesting or panel cutting optimization, decides how to arrange rectangular (or more complex) parts across sheet or panel stock — such as metal sheet, MDF, plywood, glass or acrylic — so that the fewest sheets are used and the least material is wasted.

What is sheet nesting?

Sheet nesting is the layout step in 2D cutting optimization: fitting a set of flat parts onto a sheet or panel as tightly as possible, respecting any cutting-method constraints (such as guillotine-only cuts), so more usable parts come from fewer sheets.

What is the difference between 1D and 2D cutting optimization?

1D (linear) cutting optimization arranges pieces along the length of a bar or profile — only one dimension matters. 2D cutting optimization arranges rectangular or shaped parts across the area of a sheet or panel — both width and height matter, which makes the layout (nesting) problem significantly more complex than 1D.

Does Barcut Pro support 2D optimization?
